News - 125 Challenge (23rd January 2009)

The annual BB challenge in honor of our 125th Anniversary!

To celebrate the 125th Anniversary of the Boys’ Brigade a challenge was set up for all the BB Companies throughout the UK. We had to have an independent judge for each team taking part and all we had was an envelope for each team that could not be opened till the stopwatch had been started (not even the judges were aware of the contents of the envelope, all they had was a list of equipment needed for the tasks)!

So at 8:07pm (should have been 8:00pm but we had to wait for Alex to arrive) on Friday 23rd January 2009 we started the stopwatch. The boy’s and the judge had 10 minutes to read the instructions then 50 minutes to complete the tasks.

The tasks were;

  • Code Breaker – this task involved the boys having to run 10 metres to pick up a card with a number on between 0-9, they then ran back to the judge at the start line to see if he had got the correct number to match the code the judge was holding, if it was the wrong number then they had to run back to replace it at the 10M line.
  • Dribbling Medley – The boys had to football dribble, uni-hoc dribble, table tennis dribble and basketball dribble round a 40 metre conned course.
  • The Weakest Link – they had 5 minutes to answer as many questions as possible to create a chain of correct answers, if they got 1 wrong then they would loose everything (nil points).
  • Bible Hunt – this was a crossword puzzle but if you don’t know the Bible inside out then you have to ‘Hunt’ through it for the answers.
  • Cup Pyramid – the aim of this task was to build a pyramid with plastic cups, but the cups had to be stacked at the start and re-stacked at the end without the pyramid falling apart during the attempt.  Sounds easier than it was, especially as it was a timed event!
  • Complete the Phrase – this was 19 bits of phrases that you had to put together e.g.; 5 L and 3 F = 5 Loaves and 3 Fishes, and 1 J NYD = 1st January New Years Day.
  • Running Relay – all they had to do here was complete as many 30 metre runs as possible within a 5 minute time period.

Although all this sounds achievable, the pressure was really on because it all had to be done within the 50 minutes!  The 3 four boy teams all did really well and they all although exhausted mentally and physically enjoyed the evening. We would like to send a big thank you to our 3 judges on the evening!
